Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key safety protocols for a river trip?
Safety is our highest priority. Before every trip, we conduct a detailed safety talk covering essential equipment, proper seating in the raft, self-rescue techniques, and paddle commands. All trips are guided by certified professionals trained in Swiftwater Rescue. Every participant must wear a properly fitted PFD (Personal Flotation Device) and helmet at all times while on the water.
Good movement in the raft comes from staying balanced, reacting quickly to the guide’s commands, and paddling in synchronized rhythm with your crew. Focus on using your core, not just your arms, to power the stroke. The more efficient and coordinated your paddling, the better the crew can navigate and manage the boat through intense rapids.
If you unexpectedly find yourself in the water, the primary rule is to remain calm and follow the guide’s instructions. Get into the ‘safe position’ (floating on your back with your feet pointed downstream). If possible, swim toward the raft or a nearby safety kayak. Never try to stand up in fast-moving water, as your foot could get caught between rocks.
We provide high-quality protective gear, including PFDs and helmets. We recommend participants wear synthetic, quick-drying layers (avoid cotton, which stays wet and cold). Closed-toe shoes (like neoprene booties or old sneakers) are mandatory for foot protection. Sunscreen and securing eyeglasses with a retainer are also highly recommended.

Consistent experience is key to becoming a proficient paddler. Going on a variety of trips (3-4 times per season) helps you progress steadily. Experiencing different river conditions and rapid classes builds muscle memory, improves your ability to “read the water,” and strengthens your confidence in various scenarios.

Accuracy and smooth navigation improve when the entire crew practices paddling with control and synchronization, rather than just raw power. Spend time listening to and instantly following your guide’s commands for specific strokes (e.g., “Left Forward!”). The more focused and precise the crew’s paddling, the more confidently the guide can execute the perfect line through the rapid.
